Nasrin Mahmoudi, PharmD., PhD, is a highly skilled pharmaceutical scientist working in Application Development & Innovation (AD&I) at IFF Pharma Solutions. She’s a pharmacist by education, also a “phytophile” – a plant lover – who loves learning about medicinal plants and their benefits in both traditional medicine and food.
Nasrin is currently leading several key customer projects related to controlled release as well as immediate release formations, but when she’s not working you might find her roaming local botanical gardens where she can indulge her plant passion! Before her post-doctoral studies at Rutgers University (New Jersey, USA) where she worked on oral delivery of peptides, she taught a course at Tehran University of Medical Science on phytochemistry – the study of chemicals derived from plants – and her interest deepened from there.
“Many medicines are derived from natural sources, mostly plants, and that fascinates me. For example, aspirin and codeine are both made from chemicals in the willow and poppy plants respectively,” said Nasrin.
At work, she shares her expertise in the application of IFF excipients in formulations of pharmaceutical oral drug products like matrix and osmotic tablets using strategies such as solubility enhancement, taste masking, and different processing techniques. At home, she enjoys quality time with her family and friends watching movies, playing video games and sightseeing. She also volunteers at her local foodbank and at Ronald McDonald House to support families with children in the hospital.
“My favorite IFF plan is Do More Good,” Nasrin said. “Not only is it vital to preserve our natural resources that nourish and heal us, but it’s also important to work to improve the world and our communities.” She hopes to be an example for others, and we believe she’s doing just that!
