Thriving in Pharma and Beyond: Strategies for Women to Lead and Succeed

By Angela Strzelecki, President, IFF Pharma Solutions

The pharmaceutical industry is a dynamic field where innovation meets opportunity. Yet, for women in this space, the path to leadership often requires navigating unique challenges. Over my career, I’ve seen firsthand how mentorship, networking, and a commitment to growth can empower women not only to thrive but to redefine what leadership in pharma looks like.

As someone who has personally navigated multiple roles in complex organizations, I’ve made it a priority to cultivate an environment where women are empowered to lead with assurance and purpose. Through a commitment to fostering collaboration and support, we’re inspiring future leaders to shape global business for evolving market needs.

At IFF Pharma Solutions, we believe that success in pharma requires deliberate actions. For women navigating the corporate world, I’ve found that four strategies can fuel a woman’s success: building a strong network, embracing continuous learning, developing leadership skills, and advocating for yourself. I’ve employed these strategies in my own professional journey, and I’m confident they can empower others as well.

First—Build a Strong Network

Personal success in business doesn’t happen in isolation. Building and nurturing a professional network is one of the most powerful tools for career advancement. Networking offers the chance to exchange ideas, learn from diverse perspectives, and uncover opportunities you might not otherwise find.

When I reflect on my professional journey, the connections I’ve made have been pivotal. Joining professional organizations, attending industry events, and especially engaging in informal conversations with peers have provided valuable insights and opened doors I never anticipated.

Mentorship plays a crucial role here. Great mentors don’t just provide guidance; they amplify your potential and encourage you to take bold steps. If you haven’t already done so, seek out mentors who can offer both professional insights and personal encouragement. When the time comes, pay it forward by mentoring others—it’s one of the most fulfilling aspects of leadership.

Second—Embrace Continuous Learning

The pharma industry evolves at a rapid pace, and finding challenging roles you love means committing to lifelong learning. From understanding new regulations and technologies to keeping up with advancements in patient care, continuous education is critical.

For women in pharma and in other areas of business, this also means stepping into areas that may seem outside your comfort zone. Pursuing certifications, attending workshops, or taking on stretch projects at work can build both expertise and confidence.

By seeking out opportunities to collaborate across departments or tackle cross-functional projects, women can gain valuable exposure to different facets of the industry. For instance, participating in initiatives that intersect with regulatory affairs, technology adoption, or patient engagement can provide a broader understanding of our business.

These experiences not only deepen your expertise but also position you as a versatile leader who can navigate complex challenges with confidence.

Third—Develop Your Leadership Skills

Leadership isn’t just about holding a title—it’s about inspiring and empowering others. Emotional intelligence, adaptability, and the ability to foster collaboration are key traits of effective leaders.

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that embracing challenges is essential. Women often hesitate to take on leadership roles unless they feel 100% prepared, but my advice is simple: Don’t wait for perfect readiness. Trust in your abilities and approach every challenge as a learning opportunity.

Volunteer for leadership roles within your organization or professional associations, even if they seem outside your comfort zone. Seek opportunities to lead projects or represent your team in cross-functional meetings. To enhance your public speaking and communication skills, consider enrolling in a short class or taking advantage of online platforms offering leadership workshops. These deliberate steps will not only refine your leadership abilities but also elevate your professional profile, positioning you as a trusted and visible leader.

Fourth—Advocate for Yourself

Advocacy begins with believing in your value. Women often undervalue their contributions, but it’s crucial to confidently communicate your accomplishments. As appropriate, highlight your achievements and share them with your team and leaders to ensure your work is recognized.

Whether it’s for a new position, new project or promotion, don’t hesitate to advocate for what you deserve.

Looking Ahead

To summarize, To summarize, thriving in science-based organizations requires more than technical expertise—it’s about building a strong network, embracing lifelong learning, and advocating for yourself and other women in the field. When women lead with confidence, they not only advance their own careers but also create a ripple effect that uplifts their colleagues—and enriches an entire industry.

At Pharma Solutions, we’re proud to support women in pharma and celebrate their contributions to shaping the future of healthcare. By fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, we’re ensuring that the next generation of women leaders has the tools they need to succeed.

As I continue my career journey, I remain inspired by the resilience, ingenuity, and passion of the women I meet along the way. Together, we are defining what successful women can achieve in pharma—and beyond.
